Client Spotlight: The Organization for Autism Research

The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) was created in December 2001–the product of the shared vision and unique life experiences of OAR’s seven founders. Led by these parents and grandparents of children and adults on the autism spectrum, OAR set out to use applied science to answer questions that parents, families, individuals with autism, teachers and caregivers confront daily.OAR’s mission of “applying” research to answer questions of daily concern for those living with autism drives each of the goals and objectives that define OAR’s programs and determine its budget.

OAR grants mainly pilot study programs researching primarily the affects of different types of Autism and how the people touched by Autism can best support the autistic person. Last year the RUN for Autism program raised over $700,000 for the organization. OAR is not the most known Autism group in America but its reputation is slowly building. In 2008, Hilltop Consultants helped OAR increase visibility by addressing branding research, suggesting strategic relationships with other non-profit organizations and general benchmarking. The team also helped increase fundraising capacity by suggesting new methods of reaching out to potential runners and also developed a comprehensive fully implementable run event in DC for OAR. This will allow OAR to develop their own run in the near future.
